Description: The "downturn of the fishery" occurred with the imposition of a moratorium on the Northern cod fishery on July 2, 1992. This was largely due to overfishing that had depleted the cod stocks to less than one percent of their historic levels. The moratorium ended centuries of fishing in Newfoundland and Labrador, causing widespread unemployment for around 30,000 people. A diaspora resulted with many people who relied on the fishery for their livelihood, closing their homes, storing their boats, and moving away from the province to get work.
