Description: My husband Paul and I love to explore the coves and bays of Newfoundland. We pack up our little camper and venture off the beaten track. So many of our small towns were once significantly larger and more active – in the fishery, in raising livestock, in subsistence farming. You don’t have to look far for evidence. Under years of neglect you can still see the furrows of the potato beds. The abandoned apple trees still bear fruit, though there are few to pick them. Fields where you once had to pick your way between the sheep turds are now quiet and covered in brush. This root cellar stands not far away from a tumble-down foundation. While the door is gone, the cellar is well built and has a cement roof, an indication that it was built by a family of means. But they are gone now, and only the grasses wave overhead. There is so much history and present living to be seen around our beautiful province.
